City Groups

Renovation Church - Atlanta, GA from Verge Network on Vimeo.

Renovation's City Groups are our primary means for mission, serving, community, discipleship, resourcing, accountability, mentoring, and training.  All are welcome: followers of Jesus, seekers, doubters, and skeptics.

A City Group is not just a small group as we have come to define it in the south. It is not just a bible study, support meeting, social justice collaborative, or a weekly "get together."  It can involve all of these, but it can’t stop there.  The goal is to do life together intentionally and on mission. Each City Group owns the spiritual apathy, spiritual confusion, brokenness, needs, pains, hurts, struggles, and fears of the greater community that surrounds it because City Groups are the primary conduit for Renovation to engage and serve Atlanta in God’s reconciling work in the city.

There are three components of City Groups: 1) Gospel, 2) Mission, and 3) Community.  Every group will lean toward and be stronger in one of these directions, but they should consistently fight to course correct and balance out these directional leanings. Traditionally the church has made the wrong issue central to its existence  (i.e. community, social justice, care, insular needs etc.). Renovation is raising the issue of mission and solving it with the gospel in the context of community.

We must move beyond being told where and how to serve as we begin to do mission, to be present and invested in others' lives, making spiritual and cultural imprints where we live, work and hang. Being a part of God's family, living for His mission and in community is critical to being the church, rather than simply attending worship services. A Renovation City Group is a family of missionaries in Atlanta.
